Yes. I got first-hand knowledge about setting up my own dedicated server. Very interesting. Of course, I gave them up after I have learned what I wanted.

If you have great experience in web servers and you feel that you don't need any type of help then you can buy server otherwise i would suggest you to take on rent.

I would suggest you rent dedicated servers until it becomes more viable to purchase them outright and rent collocation space.

Unless you have a concrete plan on how to make an earning viawebsite a dedicated host, I dont see much of its use in practicality. If you have plans of setting up a website which would require a huge bandwidth (something like a twitter or Facebook) it would still not need one until it has bloomed and there has been a huge traffic flow.

Buying a server only makes sense if you have a great idea and tested out its commercial potential. Remember buying a server not only costs upfront money but also requires significant money and effort towards its maintenance. So unless your site can earn a lot right from the start, I would advise against buying a server.
