I never pay yearly for hosting because you'll probably need to upgrade your hosting before the year is done, so your wasting money. Yes you get discounted for yearly plans, but I still don't think it worth it. A lot of sites end up closing down within the first few months as well.

One of the biggest reasons why I have never thought of paying yearly is that I don't have enough confidence that the hosting provider I am using will still be the same until the whole year is over. I am not saying that the company will close shop. However so many things can change. They make change their technical support staff. They may change their hardware. And every change introduces an element of uncertainty.

Though paying yearly shall have its own perks like reduce monthly hosting rates, as a whole, I prefer monthly plans for yearly plans. There may be cases where I may have to shift to other hosting providers or upgrade for a better plan or there may even be cases where I shall be dissatisfied with the services offered by one hosting company and may need to shift to another hosting provider. During those times, I think having a monthly plan shall suit me better.

I personally prefer paying monthly, because I might need more space/bandwidth after some months...
I also prefer to choose monthly pay for my Shared web hosting service at XnYnZ.com .Here I choose Ultimate plan at the rate of $15.74 per month so that i got unlimited space, bandwidth, websites etc.,They provide good service with the reliability.

You have to pay on monthly basis because it will help you to shift the data center it you are not getting good services from them.

I don't think upgrading should stop you from buying a longer term contract. You can always upgrade when you need to and the contract can be adjusted accordingly. The service provider is always willing to give a hand when you upgrade.
