What plug do you suggest if I want to incorporate a forum into my site seemlessly? I want to utilize the basic format of my theme using Wordpress, but I need to know what software to use for my forum, or do you suggest merely building a separate site with just the forum alone?

A separate site with forum alone in my opinion is a better idea. But then, before that I need to ask you what is the purpose of (or better - the relationship of forum and your website). I have seen several sites which need a forum - like the website hosting ones or even some of those who give away themes and applications (either for free or sell them) to provide support to their members.

If this is the scenario with you, I think you can opt for a sub-domain and put up the forum on that sub domain. That way, your domain would be useful, people will not have to go to another website and also the traffic would count.

Loading up a forum via a plugin or otherwise on Wordpress is not a suitable and viable option in the long run given the fact that the memory on the servers is limited (normally to 40MB per domain) and that will drastically effect the functionality and efficiency of your wordpress site and the forum as well. So try to avoid this pitfall. As I do believe and wish that your forum would attract a good set of visitors.
