I think guest posting is alright but it can be risky. Regular readers can get confused and a little turned off if the content isn't up to normal standards. You also don't want someone that will outshine you.

I think the question is not exactly about having someone that will outshine you. It's more about whether you have information that is useful. If you post something that's just a repeat of what everyone has been saying, then your guest post is lacking in merit.

Guest posting in a blog is one of the best methods to build a successful blog. guest posting is also useful for branding and for traffic.

You could always allow guest posting that is required to be approved before it's published on your blog. That'll allow you to get free content from your visitors, and filter out the spammy blog posts or duplicate content.

I have never tried this because of spam. Do you allow it on your forum? If so, how is it working for you?

For branding? I doubt it. I mean if you are talking about the brand of the host blog. As far as I know, guest bloggers are only interested in promoting their own brands not the brand of the host blog. To promote your brand, you have to do the blogging yourself, not depend on guest blogs.

When guest posting you are usually allowed a link back to your blog.
