Which Forum Software Should I Go For?

Hi

It has been years now that I had my own forum. And since the past few months I have been really keen on setting up a forum for me wherein I do hope that I would be able to get some good number of visitors.

When I had my earlier forum, there were I think only a few of these applications and phpBB was my choice. Today, times have changed and there are a lot many more in the fray.

I would like to know what the community would recommend for me. ah, if this info can help - I am having quite a comfortable knowledge of core PHP, MySQL, and some of jQuery too. So I would be doing some mods onto anyone I use - like email features etc would be added up if they are not provided as chores on the software.

And I do not earn much, am from India and so Paypal would not allow me to buy any software because of my country-specific restrictions.

Really the most efficient software seems to be MyBB. It has thousands of different mods and plugins, and there are a few great themes. So I recommend trying that, otherwise you could get yourself a vBulletin license.

If you are looking for a free Forum software then check MyBB. It has better features and you will get less spam compared to some other forum softwares. If you are looking for a paid Forum software then you may check IPB. IPB has better features and is more professional.

I hear that vBulletin might not be the way to go because of recent issues within the development team and community. I don't really know, it's just what I've read in a few different places. I was really serious about going with vBulletin before reading about these issues. I might still give it a try, but I might wait until later to see what its future holds.
