General Topic or Niche
You can build your website around general informative topics or niche ones. Overall, niche websites work best with adsense. First off, the ad targeting is much better. Secondly, as you are focused on the subject, your writing becomes more expert-like by nature. Hopefully this makes you more of an authority in your field.

Myself, I am inclined towards niche markets. Considering that there are more than one hundred million people surfing the net every day, just having one visitor out of a million surfers will already give you more than a hundred visits every day.

I think it depends on - whether the website is a business only website or a personal blog kind of website. The next thing is whether you want to build a brand for yourself or just want to get noticed and use the content that you publish for other reasons. I think, depending on these, you should go for what you want on your website.
I had a blog which I started to showcase my writing skills to my clients. And as such, it has had various categories and all was needed was content so that I could show that to various clients depending on need - so it included technical writeups, non-technical writeups, even simple home earning plans. And when I did put up google adverts, they had no issues.

Niche is always better for me. I'm someone who concentrate mainly on Adsense, and Adsense works well with niche related websites.

General topics are too wide range, and it's better to focus on niche websites so you can rank better in search engines faster. There are too many people that open up general sites that cover a wide range of topics.

There's another way of doing this. You can still use a general forum but approach it from a different angle. Like, for example, you can have a general discussion with the emphasis on being humorous. So the members can talk about anything and everything but the main point is to see the funny side of things.

I think niches work better because it usually means it's a subject you're interested in, or could more easily manage learning about. If I wanted to have a more general type of site, I think that I would try to build it up one niche at a time over a long period of time. This way I'm building on top of an established foundation.
