Cent OS vs. Ubuntu Linux Server
I've noticed a lot of hosting companies offering Cent OS as their Linux server OS. Why don't more companies offer Ubuntu or another Linux distribution. I always use Ubuntu on my development server, but I have several servers with Cent OS. It's a pain, because the command line instructions are different.

I think Centos is popular because many control panels work with it. I used to have Centos on my servers and I can use cPanel or Kloxo with Centos. Now I have switched to Debian. And I am using Webmin as my control panel.

I think the biggest problem with Ubuntu is its newness. I mean it has been around for okay quite a few years now, no doubt, but the OS has not been marketed in the right way. That might be one reason and another major one is the fact that Cent OS has been a kind of de facto for so many years already. Just like, Microsoft still rules just because of its age on the Personal Computers, though Apple's O/S are still much better and come only for Macs.
I think Ubuntu quite lost that some years back when it was proposed to be used on the free Laptops for children in Africa. It was a big breakthrough for Ubuntu no doubt but it could provide them recognition only for the Desktops and Laptops not for the Servers on the Web.
I personally use Ubuntu and am much at home with them. But then, I dont have servers, just two desktops.

Hi Don and Simply. You make some really good points. Don, you are right, the fact that CentOS works well with cpanel and plesk makes it a really good Linux solution for hosting companies. I guess I overlooked that point, because I do so much via the command line that I often overlook the implications of using a control panel. It's difficult shopping for a server, when all that's available is Cent OS systems. I guess the solution is to do Amazon EC2 or Rackspace, where you can mount whatever OS you want.

Thanks dear I was also not cleared about their difference, as you said it is more popular so yes it is as I am also using it but didn't knew the difference.

I would say that CentOS would be my operating system of choice, this is so because many panels such as cPanel Kloxo and others work perfectly along with some webserver technology like nginx or apache. I actually am planning to open a free shared hosting program, and I will for sure be using CentOS for my operating system.

CentOS is good only if you need cpanel, if you need good stability and performance I'd prefer debian(ubuntu)

I only have experience with Centos, so that's what I use, and I think it's better. When I installed Ubuntu it also used up more memory then Centos.
