What are your Strategies in Finding the Keywords for Your Website?
Hi
I am planning to get into SEO for my own website. But as I am a novice in this, I have no clue on how do I start finding keywords for my website and what do I do with those keywords.
I think once I know how to find keywords for my website, I would be putting (or stuffing, that I think is the more appropriate word) them into my meta tags, my content (which I plan to post on the blog section of my website).
I have a very faint idea as most of the times, I was asked to write articles and the keywords were given by the task owners - those who hired me.
Any tips here?
Oh yes, my website is supposed and planned to be my portfolio website and I have been a website developer - coding and some designing too. And I have also been a webmaster for a few years now.

There are some good tips for choosing keyword for new website:
1 You'll want to think about who is your target audience, and what the primary focus of your website will be. Need help on this one? Read my article titled Understanding Your Audience.
2 Jot down a list of words and phrases that you think people might type into search engines when looking for your site. Don't worry about being perfect: just be creative. This might be a good time to review how to brainstorm for keywords and phrases.
3 Each page on your site should have one to three related keyword phrases that are site-specific. For example, say you have a page all about coffee mugs. Good phrases to target on this page would be coffee mugs, ceramic coffee mugs, or unique coffee mugs. See what I mean? They're all related, and they're all pointing at the same general content on the page.
4 Your keywords should be used throughout your site copy - where they make sense - as well as in your title tag and various meta tags. Don't go nuts and start inserting keywords every other word, because this is considered bad form. Read more about the title tag, meta tags, and unethical search engine optimization.
5 It takes a while to get the hang of finding the right keywords that work, but once you've mastered this skill, you'll really see how this can benefit your site. Want more information? Read my article titled Including Keywords In Your Site Content and Source Code.
Tips:
(1) Be creative, but be choosy.
(2) Try not to target keyword phrases that are too competitive.
If there are unusual words associated with your content that you think people might search for, or misspellings, include them sparingly.
What You Need
(A) Creativity
(B) Persistence

I find the Google Keyword Tool very handy when deciding on the keywords to concentrate on. What I do is try out some keywords related to my niche. Then I choose the ones which have more than a million searches per month but with low competition. This means that a lot of people are searching using those keywords but there are not many sites which meet their search criteria.

I use google adwords for that

I use google adwords, and also use senuke to see good keywords also I analyze competitors.

I look up new keywords every time I create a new page or feature that needs to be optimized for search engines using the google keyword tool, and I choose both high competition and low competition keywords that I want to rank for.

Actually, you have a find out the keywords before you even start a website. There is not much point in starting a website, and then finding out that all the keywords in the niche is above medium competition and cant ranked easily. So do the keyword Research first, and then make your website around it.

When my agency launched, we targeted “search engine positioning services” out of the gate due to the low competition and faster potential for quick gains. The traffic was far lower but the ROI was faster.

Google Adwords is always the best and reliable service out there. Supported by the mighty Google itself, it delivers the quality results at some easy clicks and helps you to know the competition of your keywords.
